Forced Spring Bulbs - Daffodils, Hyacinths and Tulips

Forced Spring Bulbs - Daffodils, Hyacinths and Tulips

Van Belle Flowers is frequently asked what can be done with potted tulips, daffodils and hyacinths after they have finished blooming.  Generally, the recommendation is to discard them after they have finished blooming because all the strength has now left the bulb and to get a second bloom from these bulbs will not be a sure thing.

Spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses, and grape hyacinths, may do well outdoors after forcing.  Typically, tulips do not re-bloom when planted again in the garden.  Forced hyacinths may re-bloom when planted, but do not expect the large, beautiful blooms that the original plant had.

To save your forced bulbs, keep your bulb plant actively growing and remove flowers when they have finished blooming.  Place the plants in a cool, very sunny location and keep the soil slightly moist to the touch.  Let the leaves mature or die down naturally.  Fertilize the plant once a month with a water soluble fertilizer.  Usually, the longer the leaves stay green and healthy, the stronger the bulb thus the better chance of it re-blooming in your garden next year.

Store the bulbs in a dark, dry location over the summer.  Plant in October, the same as you would with any regular spring bulb.  Throw away any bulbs that have gone soft or diseased over the summer.
